Derek is a 1996 graduate of Syracuse University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He began his career with the firm in 1995 as a student intern, serving as an Owner’s Field Representative on district steam and building renovation projects. Since then, he has contributed to a broad range of civil, site work, HVAC, and plant design projects. In 2006, Derek was named Vice President of the firm.
Derek has been involved with many projects for several higher education clients as well as a mix of commercial and industrial projects. Some of the most notable include several underground district steam and chilled water systems, renovations and modernizations of thermal energy plants, site and site utilities projects involving water, sewers, electric distribution, communication networks, natural gas, process piping, and site lighting. He heads the civil department for the firm which includes the services above in addition to master site and utility planning. Derek performs pipe stress analyses per ASME B31.1 and B31.3 for a variety of higher education clients, thermal distribution systems, and equipment manufacturers.
Derek is an active member of several professional organizations, including the International District Energy Association (IDEA), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the American Water Works Association (AWWA),and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is also a LEED Accredited Professional.
In December 2022, Derek was appointed President of the firm. Derek is responsible for the civil engineering services provided by the firm as well as duties as the firm's president.
